Director's Notes

Dan MurphyThis energetic musical revue could truly be called 8-Track: The Personal Songbook of Dan Murphy’s Formative High School Years. If I danced to it in high school, it’s in this revue. I have such a personal passion for the music of this era that “Disco” was the nickname everyone called me in high school. There aren’t enough positive things I can say about the sounds of the ‘70s. From the driving syncopated basslines to the electric interludes from the guitar, pianos, and synths, the music is undeniably recognizable.

Beyond that, though, disco brought us dances that are still bringing people to the dance floor today. The Hustle, with its basic, easy to remember steps, broke down barriers and encouraged everyone to move and groove together while adding their own flavor and spice.

What I love about doing a musical revue is that it introduces people to songs they may not have heard in 50 years, all packed into one neat little package for you to enjoy. While 8-tracks themselves may not have lasted past the ‘70s, the music on those tapes has truly stood the test of time, appearing in many soundtracks even 50 years later. Whether you played the double album for Saturday Night Fever until it wore out or saw the movie at the Larchmont Playhouse three times in one week (like I did), I know there will be tracks you know and love in this revue.

All that’s left to do is sit back, relax, PLEASE don’t sing along, and enjoy 8-Track: The Sounds of the ‘70s.
