No Broadway musical would be complete without a classic dance scene – which choreographer Rosharra Francis knows all about. Originating and performing in the first Broadway National Tour of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in 2015 and continuing on and off again until 2022, Rosharra knows the show inside and out and is ready to wow audiences with dynamic choreography this summer at Broadway Rose.

A performer first and at heart, Rosharra has been active in the arts since a young age. After studying voice at a performing arts high school and throughout college, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in musical theatre. Regionally, Rosharra has performed in many productions such as Beehive: The ‘60s Musical, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, and her personal favorite – Deidre Goodwin’s revival of Dreamgirls at Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, where she stepped into the role of Michelle Morris.

In addition to performing, Rosharra has ventured to the other creative side of the table: choreography of a large-scale production of Beautiful. With her experience in dancing, acting, singing, and studying under Josh Prince, the original choreographer of Beautiful, Rosharra is bringing her knowledge and style to the show’s dance scenes.

Excited to see a whole new version of Beautiful at Broadway Rose, Rosharra will implement the stylized movements of the ‘60s and ‘70s, combined with the classic Broadway ‘razzle-dazzle.’ “I think it’s just going to be a good time,” said Rosharra. “The most exciting number is ‘The Locomotion.’” Nostalgia is a key component of the show, filled with Carole King classics, in addition to hits by The Drifters, The Shirelles, The Righteous Brothers, and Little Eva. Drawing inspiration from the different musicians’ signature dances, the choreography elevates their style but keeps the essence of their original moves.

In addition to working in theatre, Rosharra has worked in television, film, and commercials. In 2023, Rosharra made a cameo in the Hulu-original mystery drama, Only Murders in the Building. Projects she has worked on in TV and film frequently involve music, which still touches on one of her passions. “It feels really comfortable in that way,” said Rosharra.

Spending the summer in Oregon, Rosharra looks forward to helping bring Carole King’s story to life on stage: “I’m grateful for this experience of knowing the show inside and out,” said Rosharra. “I’m grateful to the people associated with Beautiful,” such as associate choreographer, Joyce Chittick, and director David Ruttura.

Getting to be an integral part of Beautiful’s production history is indeed an accomplishment, and Broadway Rose is thrilled to have Rosharra as a part of the team for this unique and beautiful production this summer.
