Broadway Rose and Patsy Cline, together again
by Linda Ferguson at Oregon ArtsWatch

“Always … Patsy Cline,” a musical about the friendship between the legendary country singer and her biggest fan, is still delighting packed Oregon audiences the fourth time around…. Read more
Our Patsy Cline: Sara Catherine Holder
As a performer for almost 20 years, Sara Catherine got her B.A. in theatre from The University of Alabama and spent the bulk of her time focused on musical theatre performance. While she currently resides in Chicago, Sara Catherine is no stranger to the Broadway Rose stage. Previously performing in Always…Patsy Cline in 2018, 2013, and 2009, Sara Catherine has also appeared in Nite Club Confidential, A Very Merry PDX-Mas, Hairspray, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Cats.
Sara Catherine stepped into the role of Patsy Cline originally in 2005 and has performed in Oregon, Alabama, and South Carolina. She will now be making her fourth appearance as Patsy Cline at Broadway Rose. “I was 22 the first time I played her–about the same age she was when she was releasing her first singles. Now at 41, I have a very different perspective on her life and all the things she faced,” explained Sara Catherine. “I feel like this role has grown with me as Patsy has been with me at the many different stages of my life.” With a personal connection to Patsy Cline, Sara Catherine is ready to pour all her knowledge of the role and her talent into this production once again.
Aside from the opportunity to sing all of Patsy’s iconic songs, Sara Catherine’s favorite part is sharing the story of such a trailblazing woman. “Patsy was far ahead of her time and during an era when most women weren’t able to make a mark in the male-dominated industry, she did!” said Sara Catherine. “I’m all about celebrating the pluck and grit of incredible women.”
Director's Notes
Maya Angelou, the American author and poet, once said, “It’s wonderful that whenever Patsy Cline’s name is mentioned, people’s voices fall and they become right sentimental. And, rightly so.”
Patsy Cline holds a special place in the history of American music. She was one of the first women to take charge of her own career in a male-dominated industry. She was the first female country music star to headline her own touring show and receive higher billing than male stars. She was the first female country singer to appear at Carnegie Hall. She was the first female singer inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. And the list goes on.
But this play is not only about Patsy. You are now sitting in the living room of a divorcée from Houston who opened her heart and her home to one of her heroes. Louise Seger was real, and that night in 1961 really did happen.
In a world where we “like” our friends on Facebook and text our conversations, a story like Louise’s could only happen when we are brave enough to invite a stranger home for bacon and eggs. It’s what happens when we allow ourselves to love and be loved. My hope is that these two hours will remind you that friendship is deeper than being “followed” on Instagram, and that if we can just take the time to put down our phones and really listen to each other, we may find that the connections we build are richer, more meaningful, and truly enduring.
I invite you to come on in, sit right down, and make yourself at home.
