A Note From the Director: Isaac Lamb

“If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch you must first invent the universe.” – Carl Sagan

As I sit here on the eve of our first rehearsal for this quirky, warm-hearted, romantic show, this quote from one of my scientific and spiritual heroes seems particularly apt. Fly By Night feels like an apple pie made from scratch. It’s delicious, sweet, and beckons you warmly to explore the meaning of home, love, and loss. But to make it, we must first invent the universe. So there is an enormous amount of work to be done between now and when you’re sitting in your seats. I’m positive, even at this early stage, that the team of collaborators we’ve assembled is going to create a galaxy of possibilities that are going to delight and move you.

As our play will soon make clear, we are all made of star stuff. Every last one of us. And so we are all connected, though we don’t always know it or feel it. Sitting together in the darkness of a theatre, agreeing to go on a peculiar ride together, is a grand gesture of that connection. And that is what our play tonight is about: connection. We exist in the vastness of the universe, the immensity of the human experience in all its terrifying beauty, but we are connected even at the cellular level. No matter your faith, no matter your race, no matter your age. There is great comfort in that.
