Disney's

Newsies

Based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 and set in New York City, Disney’s Newsies tells the tale of Jack Kelly, the charismatic leader of the band of teenaged “newsies.” When the publishing company raises their distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack and his band of misfits rally from across the city to strike against the bullies and fight for what’s right! Watch the newsies dance, sing, and celebrate the spirit of friendship and the strength found in knowing you’re not alone.

Content Advisories

Newsies is suitable for most theatre goers ages 8 and up. It contains some adult themes, mild language, brief staged violence, and one scene containing very mild innuendo.

Director's Notes

Photo of Lyn Cramer. When Sharon asked me to direct Newsies, I told her, “Let’s Go!,” and the search was on for incredible dancers. Dan and I, along with choreographer Amy Reynolds-Reed, were off to New York City where we found a treasure trove of gifted performers. We added them to the endless local talent here, sprinkled in our college recruits, and the result—you see and experience a cast of dancers, singers, and actors that will knock you out of your seat!

When I wrote my book “Creating Musical Theatre” in 2011, I met and interviewed Christopher Gattelli, choreographer of the original stage production of Newsies, and got real insight to how he developed the dance numbers. The power and physicality of the dancers resonated so much with me that I chose an iconic photograph of the original company to serve as the cover of my book. Newsies tells the true story of ordinary, working-class kids realizing their collective power and voice in standing up against corporate greed in 1899 New York. It is a real “David vs. Goliath” struggle of the newsboys against media barons like Pulitzer and Hearst, and parallels real-world labor strikes and fighting for a living wage. You will root for these ragtag workers and their resilience…oh, and their crazy ability to dance while they strike!!
