For 33 years, Broadway Rose Theatre Company has been enriching our communities by hiring over 2,000 high school and college students for our Technical Internship Program over the decades. Fostering relationships between professionals and students, the technical theatre internship has provided young adults with hands-on experience in hopes of helping them cultivate a passion for theatre work.

Broadway Rose’s paid interns work in various areas of the theatre and receive a well-rounded experience which leaves them better prepared for collegiate theatre programs and professional theatre work. For those who decide on a professional career in theatre, their internship with Broadway Rose provides an excellent springboard for professional networking.

While our intern hiring begins in the Spring, it’s never too early to start thinking about applying next year. Here’s what to know for 2025:

How many interns do you hire?
Broadway Rose typically hires around 50 interns for our summer productions. Depending on the amount of mainstage shows and camps we are putting on, and the demands of each one, the number fluctuates.

What types of positions are offered?
Most of the positions vary and can include different areas of interest such as:

  • Carpentry
  • Scenic painting
  • Lighting
  • Costume stitching
  • Stage management
  • Front-of-house
  • Sound

How many interns work backstage during the run of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical?
During each performance of Beautiful, around 11 interns work in a variety of positions such as spot and lightboard operators, dressers, deckhands, assistant stage managers, and other outlets that bring the show to life.

Are your internships paid?
All of our internships are paid as our summer productions are made possible by the time and work put in by so many bright, eager minds of the internship.

What will I learn?
Interns gain a lot from the program, especially real experience in what it is like to work in a professional musical theatre company. A lot of learning happens in the moment here and involves teaching interns how to work safely and effectively as a team.

Interns are often eligible for rehire which could lead to great opportunities with Broadway Rose and the theatre world.

In the meantime, check out our volunteer opportunities to start getting involved with Broadway Rose. Volunteering is a great way to gain hands-on experience in the theater as well as meet new people. Find out more here.

The technical internship program is supported by Oregon Cultural Trust and the Cultural Coalition of Washington County.
